KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- Amidst the bustling activity of Jalan Pasar Pudu, a popular shopping hub for electrical appliances and wet goods, discover a go-to spot for ornamental fish enthusiasts that offers budget-friendly options spanning various species, including those that are hard to find.
Ornamental fish at Jalan Pasar Pudu are 20 to 30 per cent cheaper than elsewhere, contributing to the enduring success of some traders who have been in business for over four decades.
For instance, Galaxy Koi Betta, which are usually priced between RM50 and RM60 each in other places, are offered at exceptionally low prices of RM15 to RM20, while small goldfish are a steal at RM4 each.
A Bernama check found that the distinctive colours of ornamental fish, displayed in buckets along shop sidewalks and in plastic packages, captivated the attention of those passing through the area.
Koi, goldfish, arowana, guppy, molly, and freshwater fish such as tengas and lampan are among the sought-after species by ornamental fish enthusiasts in the country.
Marcus Low, 31, who inherited his father’s ornamental fish business, said his father began by selling on the roadside of Jalan Pasar Pudu before eventually opening his own shop that had been in operation for 40 years.
“The majority of traders here are continuing the business that their parents started. Ornamental fish fans prefer this place since the traders here allow them to compare prices and offer them good deals
“They can haggle for the best deals and find all their essential supplies like aquariums, air pumps and fish food here,” he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, shop assistant Steven Chong, 47, said ornamental fish stock at his store were mostly obtained from local suppliers, while accessories were brought in from China.
“We have a wide array of ornamental fish, with prices ranging from as low as RM1 to thousands of ringgit depending on the species, quality, and size,” he added.
