Seven consultants appointed for Gurney Wharf project

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 21 -- Seven consultants were appointed and signed agreements with the Penang government to come out with detailed designs for each component of the Gurney Wharf project at the Gurney Drive seafront promenade.

Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow said the project was expected to begin in the second half of 2021 and completed by December 2023, at an estimated cost of RM176 million.

“The appointed consultants will prepare the detailed designs for each Gurney Wharf component before the state government calls for open tender to appoint contractors to implement the project,” he said at a press conference, here, today.

The Gurney Wharf project is a public park project facing the sea on a portion of 53 hectares of land reclaimed and handed over to the state government.

Among the planned public facilities are food courts, hawker centres, footpaths, wetlands, beach steps and facilities for the disabled, surfing park and water taxi jetty.

Chow said Tanjung Pinang Development as the company appointed by the state government as project management office, would act as advisor and oversee the implementation of works by the appointed consultants and contractors.

 He said currently, Tanjung Pinang Development has surrendered 90.07 acres (36.45 hectares)  of reclaimed land to the Penang government for the project and the remaining 40 acres (16,87 hectares) would be surrendered in stages.

The Gurney Wharf project will take about 48 months to complete and the iconic seaside recreational centre is expected to open to the public by Dec 31, 2023.
