MELAKA, Nov 26 -- A Form Six student suffered losses amounting to RM10,540 after being deceived by an offer to purchase old currency through Instagram yesterday.
State Commercial Crime Investigations Head Supt E Sundra Rajan said the male student got to know the suspect, who claimed to be an old currency collector from the United States, through the social media platform.
He said the victim was offered RM50,000 to part with his RM2 notes and one sen coins.
“Soon after agreeing to the deal, the victim was contacted by an individual who claimed to be a Bank Negara representative who said he owed the government taxes for the RM50,000 transaction,” Sundra said in a statement today.
The victim then went on to make several payments amounting to RM10,540 into two accounts provided, but only realised later that he had been cheated after failing to receive the RM50,000 as promised.
The case is being investigated under section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, he added.
