MELAKA, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- Twenty-three sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Melaka are to be upgraded with up to RM35 million approved by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) under its Sewerage Capital Contribution (SCC), covering 11 plants each in Jasin and Alor Gajah and one in Melaka Tengah.

In a statement today, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd Chief Operating Officer Mohd Taufik Salleh said the projects were expected to benefit approximately 29,011 population equivalents (PE).

“Of the 23 plants identified in Melaka, 11 are in Jasin, benefiting more than 13,216 PE, while another 11 in Alor Gajah will benefit more than 14,125 PE, with one additional plant in Melaka Tengah,” he said.

The commencement of the projects was officiated by Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad in Jasin on Nov 7 and in Alor Gajah on Nov 8.

The Melaka projects are among 537 STPs to be upgraded nationwide under Phase Two, part of a programme with a total allocation of RM1.8 billion where its Phase One, completed in September 2024, upgraded 636 STPs nationwide at a cost of RM180 million.

Mohd Taufik said the projects aimed to ensure public STPs complied with the Environmental Quality (Sewage) Regulations 2009, particularly Standard A under Paragraph (i), as stipulated by the Department of Environment.

“These projects are expected to improve sewage treatment efficiency and treated effluent quality, while supporting the long-term preservation of water resources, environmental sustainability and future development,” he added.
