National Art Gallery's Se-karang Exhibition Offers Fresh Perspectives Through Suspended Art

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Clusters of clouds and the figure of a sleeping baby form the centrepiece of the Se-Karang exhibition at the National Art Gallery, where a suspended art installation invites visitors to appreciate the artwork from different angles.

The debut exhibition features “Between Sky and Silence”, a large-scale installation by Malaysian artist Low Chee Peng that brings together elements of clouds, dreams and the inner child in the gallery’s central atrium.

National Art Gallery director-general Amerrudin Ahmad said the “Se-Karang” concept explores the connections between various elements, including the objects on display, the relationship between the artist and the artwork, the surrounding environment and visitors’ experiences.

“The concept of ‘Se-Karang’ signifies the present moment, while also conveying the meanings of formation or composition.

“Interestingly, this artwork invites us to see the space from a different perspective. The central area, which visitors usually pass through, has now become an integral part of their experience of the artwork,” he said when officiating at the exhibition today.

Meanwhile, Low said his exploration of clouds, dreams and the inner child is reflected in cloud-like forms that symbolise the ever-changing nature of life, while the figure of a sleeping baby represents innocence and imagination.

The Penang-born artist said he spent six months creating the floating sculpture in his studio. The installation comprises 20 cloud-like forms, the largest measuring 10 feet long and eight feet high.

“The strength of ‘Se-Karang’ lies in its interaction with space, offering visitors a 360-degree view of the artwork. I deliberately avoided creating uniform cloud shapes, instead allowing them to form randomly so that visitors can explore and appreciate the sculpture’s different forms,” he said.

He added that the ‘Se-Karang’ exhibition provides a platform for artists to showcase their works and creative ideas in various ways, while enhancing public appreciation of visual art.

The ‘Se-Karang: Between Sky and Silence’ exhibition is open to the public at Greyzone in the National Art Gallery until Dec 31.
