WCT Steps Up Efforts To Reduce Food Waste At Hotels

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- WCT Holdings Bhd (WCT) is stepping up efforts to reduce food waste at its hotels through improved waste processing systems and food rescue initiatives, including the redistribution of surplus edible food to communities in need.

WCT Group managing director Datuk Lee Tuck Fook said the group was exploring more effective ways to manage food waste and minimise unnecessary disposal as part of its environmental responsibility.

“Environmental responsibility is something we need to consider in the way we run our businesses, not just through activities organised outside our operations.

“At our hotels, we are looking at ways to better manage food waste and reduce unnecessary disposal,” he said in a statement today.

As part of the effort, Le Méridien Petaling Jaya upgraded its Entomal Mobile Bioconversion System (EMBC), first introduced in April 2024, to the EMBC+ system in July this year.

The upgraded system processes food waste through grinding, dewatering and oil separation, enabling more efficient and hygienic handling.

Since its introduction, the EMBC system has processed a total of 40,500 kilogrammes of food waste, helping to avoid an estimated 81 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in greenhouse gas emissions.

In July this year, Le Méridien Petaling Jaya also received Green Hotel certification from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in recognition of its environmentally responsible practices.

Meanwhile, Première Hotel Klang launched a Food Rescue Programme in September this year in collaboration with What a Waste to recover and redistribute surplus edible food, including suitable unserved buffet items, to beneficiaries through scheduled collections.

The initiative aims to reduce food waste by ensuring surplus food that is still suitable for consumption reaches communities in need.

Lee said WCT would continue to explore ways to improve its environmental practices through its business operations and employee participation.

Under the WCTGives #AGreenerTomorrow initiative, employees are also encouraged to take part in conservation activities and learn more about environmental issues affecting local communities.
