Saravanan Wants MOE To Retain 12-hour Teaching Periods For Tamil Language

05/11/2026 05:39 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M Saravanan has urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to maintain the existing allocation of 12 teaching periods for the Tamil language per week in Tamil National Type Schools (SJKT), following a proposal to reduce it to 10 periods under the 2027 school curriculum restructuring.

He said the matter was raised in a letter to Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek, which was also copied to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

A copy of the letter dated Nov 4 was also shared with Bernama.

In the letter, Saravanan stated that the proposal has also drawn the attention of teachers, parents, the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), and the Indian community.

He said Tamil schools play a vital role in preserving the mother tongue, heritage, and cultural identity of the community.

"The existing mother tongue teaching hours should not be reduced or sacrificed to make way for new subjects or modules," he said.

Meanwhile, Saravanan expressed support for the Ministry of Education's proposal to introduce a Character Building module, but suggested that its content be integrated into the existing Moral Education subject hours.

He hopes the ministry will review the proposal and either maintain or increase the allocation of 12 periods per week for Tamil language teaching in SJKT.
