RAWANG, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- Four underprivileged Indian families in Gombak received cash and essential goods to help ease their burden and bring some festive cheer ahead of Deepavali.
The assistance was channelled through the Ziarah Sinar Kasih Deepavali Programme organised by Yayasan Basmi Kemiskinan (YBK) in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Department Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU JPM) Selangor office today.
YBK chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Sakom said the families, who were registered under the e-Kasih system, were selected to receive assistance aimed at easing their financial burden and sharing the joy of Deepavali.
He said the programme also received support from the corporate sector, including Mamee-Double Decker Sdn Bhd, to enable assistance to be delivered directly to the families.
“Today, YBK, ICU JPM and Mamee came together to share the joy of the Indian community as they prepare to celebrate Deepavali.
“ICU provided food supplies worth about RM150 and education vouchers for the children, while YBK contributed RM300 in cash, in addition to Mamee products,” he told reporters after visiting the families here today.
Zainal Abidin said the outreach initiative reflected the continued commitment of YBK, ICU JPM, the corporate sector and other organisations to ensuring that those in need received attention and appropriate assistance.
“Even if we cannot provide a large amount, at least these contributions show that e-Kasih recipients are not forgotten and that the government, NGOs and corporate sector care about their welfare,” he said.
The four families received 'Kotak Rezeki' containing essential food items, snacks and cash contributions. They were among 200 families targeted to benefit from the programme this year.
Also present were ICU JPM Selangor senior assistant director (Wellbeing Section) Noor Hafizah Amat Janji, sponsors' representatives and volunteers.
