Puchong Chicken Slaughtering Case Still Under Investigation – Armizan

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) --  The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) and the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) are still investigating suspected irregularities in chicken slaughtering activities at a warehouse in Puchong, Selangor, over concerns about the halal status of its products.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said KPDN was responsible for monitoring halal claims on products at the retail level to ensure they were valid and did not mislead consumers.

He said the ministry would take action if traders used false halal claims or misleading trade descriptions.

"When products are marketed at the retail level with halal labels, we verify whether the claims are supported by genuinely halal sources," he told reporters after launching Tealive Sparkling Prebiotic Tea Soda at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur here today.

Armizan said JAKIM would provide updates on the investigation from time to time.

On Oct 30, more than 6.5 tonnes of raw chicken worth an estimated RM85,400 were seized during a raid at a warehouse in Puchong suspected of slaughtering, processing and distributing chicken without a valid halal certificate.

Preliminary inspections found that the premises allegedly used an electric water-stunning method with excessively high voltage, causing the chickens to die before slaughter and raising doubts about the halal status of the products.
