BEIJING, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- Nearly 500 delegates from 112 countries and regions have gathered in Beijing for the 7th World Media Summit (WMS), which begins today with a focus on strengthening international media cooperation and exploring the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the global media landscape.
The three-day summit, running today till Saturday, is jointly organised by Xinhua News Agency and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government under the theme “Media in the Intelligent Age: From Consensus to Action”.
The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) is represented by its Chairman, Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, and Editor-in-Chief, Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
Wong will represent Bernama at the launch ceremony of the Global Media Initiative for the Joint Development of AI Application Standards on Saturday, where he will receive a certificate on behalf of the agency.
According to the summit secretariat, discussions will focus on the transformation of global media through AI, international media dialogue and cooperation, as well as the role of emerging technologies in strengthening communication and exchanges among civilisations.
Key topics include “AI for All and the Transformation of Global Media”, “Media Dialogue and Cooperation for a Safer World” and “AI-enabled Communication for Expanding Exchanges Among Civilisations”.
The summit programme begins today with the Forum on Artificial Intelligence and Chinese Modernisation, featuring discussions on AI developments and their applications in the media industry.
Highlights include the presentation of what organisers describe as the world’s first bionic humanoid robot news anchors, alongside a signing ceremony for the Xinhua News Agency Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance (Beijing Base).
The forum will also feature a panel discussion on “Mobile Imaging Innovation and Media Transformation in the AI Era”, bringing together international media practitioners and industry experts to explore technological advancements in news production.
The summit’s official opening ceremony will take place at the Great Hall of the People on Saturday, followed by plenary and panel sessions, including “AI for All and the Transformation of Global Media”, during which Wong is scheduled to share his insights as a panellist.
Delegates are also expected to adopt the Beijing Consensus, which recognises the significance of AI technologies and the need to establish a global communication governance system suited to the AI era.
Established in 2009 by prominent international media organisations, including Xinhua News Agency, The Associated Press, Reuters, TASS Russian News Agency and Kyodo News, the WMS has served as a platform for high-level exchanges and coordination among global media stakeholders.
In addition to the discussions, delegates will also visit cultural sites in Beijing to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese capital’s traditional heritage and modern development.
