UK Premier Sees US Midterm Results As Chance To End Iran Conflict, Ease Living Costs

LONDON, Nov 4 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Wednesday said the US midterm election results offered an opportunity to unite international efforts to resolve the Middle East conflict and ease cost-of-living pressures, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

Speaking to broadcasters on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Burnham welcomed US President Donald Trump's acceptance of the election results following Republican defeats.

"Well, President Trump has accepted the results, and I feel the world has an opportunity now to unite around the issue that is affecting us all - and that's the cost of living," he said.

Burnham said tackling rising living costs had been a priority during his first three months in Downing Street but stressed that resolving the Middle East conflict was essential to easing financial pressures on households.

The British premier said he would be "working for de-escalation" and expressed hope that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen.

"People want to see the world coming together and focusing on the things that matter to people - And that's what the voters, in my view, are saying in the United States," he said.

Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday's midterm elections, ending Republican control of Congress.

The results are expected to give Democrats greater power to block Trump's legislative agenda. Republicans had previously held narrow majorities in both chambers.
