MELAKA, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- A total of RM1.6 million has been channelled by the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) to youth organisations and sports associations in Melaka for development programmes as of September this year.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the allocation was channelled through the Community Sports Fund (DSK) and the Integrated Sports Management System E-Assistance (SPSB).

He said KBS had also carried out upgrading works on community sports facilities throughout the state, including futsal, sepak takraw and petanque courts, the Hang Jebat Squash Centre and the National Sports Council Saujana Asahan Complex.

“More than 64,000 youths have benefited from these initiatives through grassroots development programmes, including in the field of sports.

“We remain committed to ensuring that efforts to empower sports and youth development at the grassroots level can continue and flourish in Melaka,” he said.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq was speaking to reporters after attending the Three-Corner Futsal programme in conjunction with the Rakan Muda @ Klebang 2026 Tour in Klebang here today.

Asked about the 16th Melaka state election, Dr Mohammed Taufiq said he was encouraged by the participation of many young candidates and hoped they would be given opportunities to make their mark on the country’s political landscape.

“This is a progressive step in Malaysia’s political landscape. Many young people are becoming interested in politics, and political parties are also fielding young candidates. This shows that opportunities for young people in politics are increasingly being embraced in our country.

“For me, the abilities, energy and the idealism brought by these candidates are very important. We should support them to ensure that leadership renewal can continue to take place,” he said.

A total of 16 candidates aged below 40 are being fielded by contesting parties in the 16th Melaka state polls, two of whom are aged between 18 and 29.

The Election Commission has set Nov 10 for early voting and Nov 14 for polling, following the dissolution of the Melaka state legislative assembly, which took effect on Sept 23.
