GEORGE TOWN, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The Penang government has approved an increase in the allowance for members of the Village Community Management Council (MPKK), effective January 2027, involving an additional annual allocation of RM4.5 million.
State Trade and Community Unity Committee Chairman Goh Choon Aik said the revised allowance rates were approved at the State Executive Council meeting on Oct 19, bringing the total annual allocation for MPKK allowances to RM17.55 million.
“Under this revision, the monthly meeting management allowance has been increased from RM100 to RM200, subject to the submission of meeting minutes in accordance with the stipulated requirements, while the meeting attendance allowance has been raised from RM100 to RM150.
“The monthly allowances for the three key MPKK positions have also been increased by RM100 each, with the chairman receiving RM800 compared with RM700 previously, the secretary RM700 compared with RM600, and the treasurer RM400 compared with RM300,” he said.
He said this when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill and a motion on the 2027 Development Expenditure at the State Assembly sitting here today.
Goh said the increase reflected the state government's recognition of the contributions made by MPKK members in safeguarding the welfare of local communities.
He expressed hope that the revised allowances would motivate MPKK leaders to discharge their responsibilities with greater initiative, efficiency and responsiveness.
He also said the state government planned to organise the Penang MPKK Premier Awards next year, based on performance assessments conducted throughout 2026.
In this regard, he urged all 375 MPKKs to improve their organisational management and intensify community programmes that directly benefit local residents.
Goh added that the state government was also considering extending coverage under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) to MPKK members through the Perkeso Lindung Kendiri initiative, beginning May 2027, subject to the scheme's eligibility requirements and regulations.
Meanwhile, he said a total of 2,138 MADANI Rahmah Sales programmes had been held throughout Penang from January to October this year, attracting an estimated 2.58 million visitors and generating RM85.29 million in sales.
Additionally, 21 Agro MADANI Sales programmes, organised in collaboration with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) at B40 residential areas and government offices, involved 442 entrepreneurs and attracted 58,614 visitors between April and October this year.
“These programmes generated RM1.25 million in sales and savings of RM375,514.50 for consumers.
“During the same period, 121 programmes were also organised at FAMA outlets, including Agrobazaar Kedai Rakyat, Permanent Farmers' Markets and Farmers' Markets, recording total sales of RM2.054 million,” he said.
