KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened an investigation into content uploaded via the Facebook account “Vikke Lee”, which is suspected of containing extremely offensive elements against the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

In a statement today, MCMC said the content also touched on sensitivities involving race, religion and the royal institution.

MCMC said the statement of the individual concerned had been recorded at the Sri Petaling Police Station to assist in the investigation.

A mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC stressed that it views seriously the dissemination of online content suspected of containing false information or elements insulting the royal institution, particularly content that could undermine social harmony.

In this regard, the public is reminded to use social media platforms responsibly and refrain from creating or disseminating content that violates the country's laws.
