KOTA BHARU, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan government will consider a proposal to introduce guidelines to curb residents from renting out their land and houses to foreigners, including Myanmar refugees, in the state.
State Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah said his committee would discuss with the Land and Mines Office (PTG) appropriate measures to regulate the matter.
He said the move was intended to prevent the emergence of foreigner communities or enclaves that could affect harmony among local residents.
“We will consider introducing guidelines on measures to curb our people from renting out their land and houses to foreigners, particularly Myanmar refugees.
“However, the most important thing is to raise public awareness so that people do not rent out their properties to foreigners. If we do not rent out our properties to them, insya-Allah, harmony can be preserved,” he said.
He said this during the winding-up session of the debate on Budget 2027 at the state assembly sitting at the Kota Darulnaim Complex here today.
Elaborating further, Hilmi said enforcement action had been taken against 47 premises operated by foreign nationals by the Kota Bharu Islamic City Municipal Council's (MPKB-BRI) Enforcement Division so far this year.
Of the total, 29 premises involved Pakistani nationals, 10 involved Indonesians, while the remainder involved Bangladeshis and Myanmar refugees.
“Among the offences committed were violations under Section 107(2) of Act 171, namely breaching the conditions of business licences issued by MPKB-BRI and operating without a business licence,” he said.
