GEORGE TOWN, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- The Penang state government has allocated RM15 million to support the hosting of the 2027 SEA Games, with the state set to be one of the four clusters for the sporting event in September next year.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the allocation would be channelled in stages to the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) this year and in 2027 to ensure preparations and the smooth organisation of sporting events in the state.

He said Penang would host six sports - sepak takraw, snooker and billiards, judo, boxing, table tennis and floorball.

“Preparations for the Penang Cluster have reached 90 per cent readiness, covering competition facilities and venues, including SPICE Arena and the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC),” he said when tabling the state's 2027 Budget at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

The 2027 SEA Games are scheduled to take place from Sept 18 to 29, with Penang hosting six sports, while Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur will each host 18 sports, and Johor will host football.

Meanwhile, Chow said the state government had allocated RM7.15 million to MSNPP to strengthen sports development and excellence in the state, particularly athlete development.

He said RM5 million had also been allocated to the Penang Stadium and Open Spaces Corporation (PSDKLPP) to upgrade and improve sports facilities and infrastructure in the state.

In addition, he said RM2.8 million had been allocated for 2027 to strengthen the role of youth agencies and organisations as strategic partners of the state government in advancing youth development and empowerment.

“This includes RM1.5 million for the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) and RM1.3 million for the Penang Youth Council (JBPP),” he said.

Chow said JBPP currently had 384 members deployed across all state constituencies, in addition to 10,976 youth volunteers who also played an active role in advancing the state's youth development agenda.

The State Legislative Assembly sitting will resume on Monday.
