KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- Classic Land Rover jeeps will be used as Iconic Tourism Vehicles in Cameron Highlands (KIPCH) following a policy decision by the Transport Ministry (MOT) to support the development of the local tourism industry while preserving the uniqueness and identity of the highland area.
MOT is targeting the implementation of the KIPCH initiative in the first quarter of 2027, subject to the finalisation of implementation mechanisms, licensing requirements, safety conditions and the designation of permitted operating routes.
The ministry said the operation of classic Land Rover jeeps under the initiative would be restricted to tourism activities at designated locations and would not be permitted to provide passenger transport services without a valid licence.
“Under this policy, classic Land Rover jeeps that have exceeded the 15-year vehicle age limit may be considered for operation as tourism vehicles, subject to compliance with the stipulated safety conditions, technical specifications and licensing requirements.
“The initiative is expected to benefit more than 60 vehicles that could potentially participate in the service,” the ministry said in a statement today.
The Tourism Minsitry believes that classic Land Rover jeeps, which have long been synonymous with Cameron Highlands, could become a distinctive tourist attraction in the area.
Besides preserving heritage value and local identity, the vehicles are also suited to the hilly terrain and challenging routes of the highlands, particularly for off-road tourism activities.
“To ensure the policy is implemented in an orderly and controlled manner, MOT, through the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), is conducting engagement sessions with stakeholders in Cameron Highlands, including the Pahang state government, Cameron Highlands District Council (MDCH), tourism agencies and local operators.
“These sessions focus on finalising implementation mechanisms, including the designation of permitted routes and operating areas, tourist pick-up and drop-off points, licensing requirements and compliance with vehicle safety standards,” the ministry said.
MOT said the initiative reflected the government's commitment to balancing regulatory compliance and transport safety requirements with efforts to strengthen local tourism potential, while preserving Cameron Highlands' uniqueness and identity as a highland tourist destination.
