DUNGUN, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- An adult female tapir weighing about 200 kilogrammes was found dead after it was believed to have been hit by a vehicle along Jalan Dungun-Bukit Besi near Kampung Serdang here last night.
Terengganu Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Dennis Ten Choon Yung said the department received a report from a member of the public at 8.30 pm before dispatching four personnel to the scene to investigate.
“An examination found that the tapir had sustained severe head injuries and several scratches on its body,” he said in a statement today.
Dennis said the incident occurred about 100 metres from the Bukit Bauk Forest Reserve, in an area where wildlife crossing warning signs had been installed.
He said the tapir's carcass was subsequently removed for disposal.
Dennis also advised motorists to exercise caution when travelling near forests and wildlife crossings, and to remain alert to warning signs to prevent similar incidents.
