KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- From traditional dances and authentic Malaysian cuisine to cultural exhibitions and animated films, Malaysia brought a taste of its rich cultural heritage to Namibia through Malaysia Open Day 2026.
Organised by the Malaysian High Commission in Windhoek on Oct 22, the event attracted about 200 guests as part of efforts to showcase Malaysia’s cultural diversity, gastronomy and creative arts while strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries.
In his welcoming remarks, Malaysian Chargé d’Affaires in Windhoek, Khornelisman Jasri, highlighted the growing relationship between Malaysia and Namibia since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1990, particularly in politics, economics, education and people-to-people exchanges.
“The friendship between the two countries involves not only governments and institutions, but is also built through the sharing of knowledge and experiences, as well as lasting personal connections,” he said, according to a statement issued by the Malaysian High Commission in Windhoek.
Held at Windhoek International School under the Malaysian Synergy Programme (PSRM), the event was attended by Namibia’s Ministry of International Relations and Trade Executive Director, Ambassador Jerobeam Shaanika, who delivered remarks on behalf of Minister Selma Ashipala-Musavyi.
Also present were members of the diplomatic corps, Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) alumni and Malaysians residing in Namibia and neighbouring Angola.
Guests were treated to traditional Malaysian dance performances, cultural exhibitions and food-tasting sessions featuring a variety of Malaysian dishes, while traditional games provided opportunities for interaction and cultural exchange.
The screening of the Malaysian animated film Upin & Ipin: The Lone Gibbon Kris also introduced audiences, particularly younger viewers, to Malaysian folklore, traditional music and the values of unity.
A Malaysia-themed quiz and lucky draw added to the festivities.
The event also provided an opportunity to strengthen ties among Malaysians living abroad and encourage their involvement in promoting Malaysia internationally.
The High Commission expressed hope that such initiatives would raise awareness of Malaysia among Namibians, attract more visitors to the country and create opportunities for closer cooperation in culture, education, tourism and trade.
