Sanglang Port To Boost Investor Confidence, Trade And Industrial Growth In Perlis

28/10/2026 06:36 PM

KANGAR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- The Sanglang Port project is expected to boost investor confidence, expand trade and attract new businesses and industries to Perlis, Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said.

He said the port’s planned facilities, including a multipurpose terminal, a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) terminal, general cargo handling and fisheries and energy facilities, would support the state’s efforts to diversify its economy.

“The port could also complement the state’s plans for the Perlis Energy Hub and Perlis Power Hub, creating opportunities for new economic activities,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the port near here today, officiated by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.

Also gracing the event was the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.

Abu Bakar said the RORO terminal could improve the movement of vehicles and goods by sea, particularly between Perlis and strategic destinations such as Langkawi.

He said suitable port infrastructure, shipping channel depth and operational facilities could improve efficiency and reduce reliance on tidal conditions, strengthening maritime transport and logistics.

Abu Bakar said the port’s success would depend on close cooperation between the state and federal governments, particularly the Transport Ministry and the Economy Ministry, as well as other stakeholders.

He said the port, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Free Trade Zone and Perlis Inland Port Depot (PIP), and Chuping Valley Industrial Area (CVIA) could complement one another to strengthen cargo movement, supply chains and logistics.

Better road and rail links connecting the three developments could enhance Perlis’ competitiveness and position the state as a regional trade, logistics and industrial hub, he added.

Meanwhile, Mutiara Perlis Group executive chairman Datuk Shabaruddin Ibrahim said the port’s first phase was targeted for completion in the second quarter of 2029.

He said the project was estimated to cost RM1 billion, including RM675 million in construction costs, and would feature a trestle and several terminals extending up to 4km into the sea to accommodate various maritime and cargo-handling activities.
