KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) – The Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) has secured a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the Highest Altitude Orchestra Performance in a Skyscraper, following a performance at Sky Xperience, Level 86, PETRONAS Twin Towers, on Oct 19.
The event offered 34 MPYO musicians with a unique performance opportunity in an unconventional setting, bringing the beauty of orchestral music to a distinctive environment at one of Malaysia’s most iconic landmarks.
The initiative was a collaboration between the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and Petrosains, which also served as the venue partner. The MBOR certificate was presented to MPO chief executive officer Siti Azlina Abd Latif at the event.
The MPYO serenaded guests with a programme featuring various genres, including Tchaikovsky’s String Serenade (first movement), Jenkins’ Palladio, Mozart’s Divertimento in D, We Are One, the popular traditional song Cindai, the patriotic song Tanah Pusaka, and the folksongs Puteri Santubong and Jambatan Tamparuli, conducted by Ahmad Muriz Che Rose.
Siti Azlina said the achievement reflected the orchestra’s dedication, hard work and passion for music, while inspiring its young musicians to pursue greater ambitions.
“We are extremely proud of this milestone achieved by the MPYO, a reflection of its dedication, hard work and passion towards music. This milestone is not merely an attempt at a new record but to inspire our young musicians to dream big.
“They may have performed 86 floors above ground level but their future in music has no limits,” she said in a statement.
She also expressed her gratitude to MBOR and Petrosains for their immense support for the event, saying it reflected their belief in the ecosystem for the future generation.
Established in 2006, the MPYO has matured artistically since making its debut at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in 2007, emerging as one of the youth orchestras to be reckoned with in Southeast Asia.
It has performed at the opening ceremony of the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session and toured Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia and Japan.
The MPYO musicians receive guidance from MPO musicians as part of the orchestra’s commitment to nurturing an appreciation of classical music among the younger generation.
Beyond its educational initiatives, the MPO also believes in developing young musicians beyond the concert stage by providing opportunities, building their confidence, and inspiring them to achieve greater heights.
