KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- A pilot project to improve wayfinding signage will be implemented at the Masjid Jamek Light Rail Transit (LRT) station and could be expanded across the rail network if successful, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the initiative is one of four components under Phase Three of the Masjid Jamek LRT Station Beautification Project, which involves an investment of RM5 million by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.

He added that the upgraded navigation system covers signage across the station to facilitate smoother passenger movement, including for foreign tourists.

“The station will undergo a wayfinding upgrade, which includes all directional signs.

“If this pilot is successful and well received, the signage design will be expanded to all other stations,” he told reporters after launching the project here today.

Also present were Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud, Prasarana Group Acting President and Chief Operating Officer Dr Prodyut Dutt, and Think City Managing Director Datuk Hamdan Abdul Majeed.

Loke said the upgrade also entails improving street lighting along Jalan Tun Perak following passenger feedback regarding poorly lit areas outside the station at night.

He said the Jalan Benteng area will be upgraded to feature cafe and recreational spaces, alongside additional platform greenery to create a cooler and more pleasant environment.

According to Loke, the station handles about 46,000 passengers daily, with ridership rising during weekends or when major events take place nearby.

“Opportunities to provide commercial space for low-income earners were also discussed with the Kuala Lumpur Mayor, with business activities required to comply with licensing regulations, remain safe, and not obstruct passenger movement,” he said.

According to Prasarana, the overall beautification project, carried out in phases since 2025 in collaboration with Think City, is expected to be completed by late 2027.
