KUCHING, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- Sarawak State Government has established a dedicated task force to coordinate the overall development of the proposed new Kuching International Airport in Tanjung Embang, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the task force comprises relevant government agencies and authorities, with physical development of the mega project expected to begin early next year.
“The proposed new Kuching International Airport will be a strategic investment in Sarawak's future, with an initial capacity of 15 million passengers annually, integrated with the wider Greater Kuching ecosystem.
“The airport will strengthen regional and international connectivity, expand passenger and cargo movement, and position Sarawak as a regional hub for tourism, trade, and investment,” he said when winding up the debate on the State Budget 2027 at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
Abang Johari noted that Tanjung Embang is being developed as a major economic growth area for Kuching and Borneo, attracting high-value industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, food processing and intelligent machines.
He added that these enhancements will position Sarawak as a regional hub for tourism, trade, and investment, with physical development expected to begin early next year.
