KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The World Health Organisation (WHO) will bring its global public health expertise to the 6th Malaysian Lifestyle Medicine Conference 2026, highlighting the role of preventive healthcare in promoting healthy ageing and tackling chronic diseases.

The conference, to be held at Berjaya Times Square Hotel here from Oct 24 to 26, will feature a dedicated WHO symposium themed “Building Health Where Life Happens – Advancing Lifestyle Medicine Approaches in Healthy Settings through the Life Course”.

Malaysian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (MSLM) president Adjunct Prof Dr Siva Poobalasingam said the conference would bring together local and international experts to explore how lifestyle medicine could help prevent chronic diseases and promote healthy ageing.

“Lifestyle medicine uses evidence-based lifestyle changes, including healthy eating, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and stress management to prevent and manage diseases and improve overall health,” he said in a statement to Bernama.

WHO Representative to Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore Dr Rabindra Abeyasinghe will deliver the keynote address and participate in an expert panel discussion at the conference.

The WHO symposium builds on a joint pilot project by WHO and the Health Ministry in Seremban 2, which demonstrated the potential of lifestyle interventions in helping patients achieve remission from Type 2 diabetes.

The conference, themed “Lifestyle Medicine: The Foundation of Longevity Medicine”, will also focus on healthspan or the number of years a person lives in good health, rather than lifespan alone.

Another highlight is a joint symposium between MSLM and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar themed “Leading the Future of Healthcare: Integrating Lifestyle Medicine into Health Systems”.

Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar dean and CEO Prof Dr Javaid I. Sheikh will deliver the Dean's Distinguished Lecture and participate in an expert panel discussion on integrating lifestyle medicine into healthcare systems.

Experts from Harvard Medical School, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, the National University of Singapore and the Asia Pacific Longevity Medicine Society will also share their expertise in lifestyle and longevity medicine.

Dr Siva said the conference was timely as Malaysia prepares to become an ageing nation by 2030, highlighting the need to help older people maintain their health, mobility and independence.
