KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Education (MOE) has requested the Education Service Commission (SPP) to appoint 317 reserve teacher candidates to fill various teaching vacancies nationwide.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the request, made in September 2026, involves a portion of the 880 remaining reserve teacher candidates who are still awaiting offers.

He noted that out of the 4,417 reserve teacher candidates from the 2025 intake, 3,537 had been offered appointments including 114 candidates from Sarawak as of September 30.

“To fill teaching vacancies, including those in Sarawak, the SPP is currently conducting interviews for the 2026 teacher recruitment drive via the open market; this process began in May 2026 and is expected to conclude in November 2026,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He was responding to a question from Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (GPS-Igan) regarding the number of reserve teacher candidates from Sarawak, vacancy statistics by specialization, and plans for their absorption into the service.

Wong said that the placement of new teachers and graduates from the Teacher Education Institutes (IPG) on September 30 had raised the overall teacher fill rate in Sarawak to 98.84 per cent, comprising 98.61 per cent in secondary schools and 98.98 per cent in primary schools.

According to him, Sarawak has so far recorded 500 teacher vacancies, comprising 224 vacancies in secondary schools and 276 in primary schools.

He said for secondary schools, the vacancies include subject specializations such as Design and Technology (RBT) and Science, while primary schools show higher vacancy figures for specializations in Mathematics, Music, and Guidance and Counseling.
