KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- Media practitioners should report accurately, fairly and responsibly on transboundary haze, and avoid narratives that blame the entire population of a country, says Ikatan Setiakawan Wartawan Malaysia-Indonesia (ISWAMI) Malaysia acting president Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman.
He said the close ties between Malaysia and Indonesia should serve as a firm foundation to discuss the issue openly and maturely, without compromising the public's right to clean air.
"Haze is not merely an environmental issue; it affects public health, the people's wellbeing and the shared responsibility of regional countries. This recurring problem requires a comprehensive solution, not just emergency measures when the situation worsens.
"ISWAMI Malaysia believes that sincere cooperation, clear accountability and effective action can ensure the haze threat does not recur and disrupt lives and environmental sustainability," he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Zaini said protecting public health must be the priority, stressing the importance of air quality monitoring, accurate health advisories, and protective measures, particularly for high-risk groups.
He advised the public to regularly monitor the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings and adhere to official advisories.
He added that prevention and enforcement measures in Indonesia must be strengthened by stepping up firefighting operations, preventing open burning, and taking stern action against lawbreakers.
Ahmad Zaini said bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia should be enhanced through hotspot data sharing, smoke movement monitoring, as well as technical and operational firefighting assistance when required.
"At the regional level, ASEAN's commitment to prevention, preparedness and emergency response must also be strengthened to achieve a haze-free region," he said.
