JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- The government has agreed to continue the BAS.MY Johor Bahru service through the Stage Bus Services Transformation (SBST) programme for five years beginning 2027.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the extension involve improvement and expanding the service network, including additional routes and bus capacity, adding that it would be done in stages based on operational needs and passenger demand.
"The contract will be finalised soon, involving 230 new buses and several other conditions,” he said at a media conference after officiating the launch of the BAS.MY Johor Bahru service expansion here today.
The extension includes the expansion of routes to new developments and focus areas with high demand, he said, including Tiram Terminal, Johor Jaya, Eco Tropics, Mall of Medini and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), while the additional buses would increase frequency of buses in main routes to between 15 and 20 minutes, and 20 and 30 minutes for feeder bus routes.
“Also, 20 more organised bus bays (will be added along Jalan Jim Quee, near JB Sentral) so that buses can be parked safely and passengers can alight faster,” he said.upaya bas boleh parkir dengan selamat dan penumpang boleh turun dan naik bas itu dengan cepat," katanya.
Loke said the stage buses introduced under the SBST since 2022 has showed positive development and currently, BAS.MY Johor Bahru covers an operational distance of 16 million kilometres annually and carried nearly a million passengers a month.
He said passenger trips rose from 450,000 a month in December 2022 to 1.06 million in December 2025, before hitting a peak of 1.28 trips in January this year.
"Through the expansion of service area coverage, total passengers are estimated to exceed 14.99 million annually,” he added.
He noted that the expansion of BAS.MY Johor Bahru is among the important components in passenger dispersal to support the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link in upcoming February.
The public transport network needs to be improved to ensure the smooth flow of passengers, he said.
