JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project involves complex engineering solutions, comprehensive testing and seamless cross-border cooperation to overcome significant operational challenges.
RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO) chief executive officer Dr Marzuki Ariffin highlighted that while the system connects only two stations across a single sea crossing, delivering a safe and reliable service requires careful integration of trains, track design, signalling systems and infrastructure.
He said the RTS Link might appear relatively straightforward as it only has two stations, but a safe and reliable journey depends on meticulous engineering.
One of the challenges identified is navigating the viaduct's three per cent gradient, the maximum slope permitted for train operations under the project's design parameters.
"Trains descend along this slope from the bridge's highest point towards ground level. They must maintain a safe speed and stop smoothly and accurately at the station," he said in a post on RTSO’s Facebook page.
Marzuki said that addressing the steep descent requires precise coordination among the track design, braking and signalling systems.
He added that wet weather conditions present additional challenges as they reduce grip between the wheels and rails, directly affecting train acceleration and braking performance.
"This is just one example of the engineering solutions that must be accomplished for every safe and comfortable journey. It involves many hours of design thinking, testing and teamwork," he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to the engineering and project teams from both countries for their hard work and dedication.
He extended his appreciation to all parties, including Malaysia’s Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), for their "One Team” spirit, support and cooperation in bringing this connection to life.
In a recent statement, RTSO said the RTS Link is expected to commence operations in February 2027, with all system tests and trial runs targeted for completion by Dec 31 this year.
RTSO said the timeline takes into account the expected duration of the remaining works, as well as the time required for third-party safety certification and approvals from the grantors of both countries.
