Budget 2027: PCM Seeks RM15 Mln Allocation To Boost Para Sports Development

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) hopes the government will allocate RM15 million under Budget 2027 for the development of para sports, including nurturing new talent and empowering national para sports associations.

PCM president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin said the allocation was needed to ensure continuous development at the grassroots level, as well as to support the operations and office maintenance of national para sports associations, particularly those without their own premises.

He said PCM had previously applied for the allocation and hoped the government would reconsider the request to ensure the development of para sports could be carried out more systematically and sustainably.

“We need the allocation for continuous development at the grassroots level, as well as to support the operations and office maintenance of associations that do not have offices. We have applied for this before, and we hope the government will reconsider our request,” he said.

Megat D. Shahriman said greater financial support would enable PCM and the national associations to identify and develop more athletes with the potential to compete at the international level, while ensuring para sports continued to receive the attention they deserved.

“With financial support, we can identify and develop more athletes who have the potential to compete at the international level.

“We are mature in terms of accountability and responsibility, so we hope the government will give greater attention to para sports,” he said after a ceremony to hand over souvenir bags to athletes at the Paralympic Excellence Centre in Kampung Pandan here today.

Meanwhile, PCM and health and wellness company, Zero Healthcare, have introduced incentives for national para athletes, with RM2,000 for gold medallists, a RM2,000 voucher for silver medallists and a RM1,000 voucher for bronze medallists.

National para contingent chef de mission (CDM) Tan Chee Keong said Malaysia are targeting six gold medals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games, which will be held from Oct 18 to 24.
