U Mobile Achieves 90 Pct CoPA Nationwide, Nine Months Ahead Of Schedule - Fahmi

06/10/2026 06:19 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- U Mobile Sdn Bhd has achieved 90 per cent coverage of populated areas (CoPA) nationwide, nine months ahead of schedule, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the successful provision of the digital infrastructure reflects the strong commitment of mobile network operators (MNOs) to accelerating the country’s technological transition.

He said the government’s decision to implement the Dual 5G Network Model has proven effective in stimulating healthy competition, enhancing investment and driving innovation in the local telecommunications sector.

“The reason is that we are now at a stage, not only in Malaysia but in many parts of the world, where questions around digital infrastructure are fundamental to technological progress, and the use of applications will start to be adopted.

“We have a bigger task ahead of us, which is, given the kind of infrastructure that has been laid out, how can we convince many, especially in the industry, to adopt the kind of solutions that we believe they should be adopting today," he said in his speech at the U Mobile’s Coverage of Populated Area (CoPA) 5G event here today.

Fahmi also urged MNOs to deepen and strengthen collaboration with institutions of higher learning, particularly universities, at an earlier stage, as changing demographics and mindsets have significantly increased data consumption among university students.

Meanwhile, U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck said the government’s decision to introduce the Dual 5G Network Model marked an important step forward in Malaysia’s digital development by promoting greater competition, investment and innovation.

Wong said the nationwide rollout began in July 2025 and, by March this year, the company had reached 80 per cent CoPA, more than three months ahead of schedule.

He said the achievement also earned U Mobile recognition from the Malaysian Book of Records for the fastest 5G network rollout to reach 90 per cent CoPA by the end of September.

“Ultra 5G now provides Malaysia’s widest 5G population coverage. The significance of this achievement goes beyond the speed of the rollout or a percentage of coverage.

“It is about bringing faster and more reliable connectivity to more Malaysians by helping people communicate, learn, work and access digital services, while enabling entrepreneurs and small businesses to reach customers, improve their operations and participate more actively in the digital economy,” he said.
