KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) will be given access to the Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) closed-circuit television (CCTV) control room at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to enhance security controls at the country's entry points.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the matter had been discussed with MAHB and an agreement had been reached on the mechanism, although implementation was still at the administrative stage.
“At the airport, comprehensive control falls under MAHB, and there are over 5,000 CCTV cameras across KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
“MAHB has its own control room, but it must be remembered that MAHB’s primary interest lies with passengers.. Therefore, the weightage given to security is not yet fully under its control," he said during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), who asked about the role of the National Immigration Command Centre (NICC) in providing security and intelligence information to enable authorities to take preemptive measures against security threats at the airport.
Saifuddin Nasution said AKPS would also enhance the existing system by installing additional CCTVs at areas identified as "blind spots".
On the recent viral video involving AKPS Director-General Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, he said the leak of internal KLIA CCTV footage was also a key aspect being investigated by police.
He said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would submit a preliminary report to the Attorney General's Chambers today to determine whether the investigation papers were complete or required further action.
"How was it possible for it to spread so widely immediately after the incident? If the source involves the 5,000 CCTVs, that implies it falls under MAHB's control.
"Whether the leak originated there or involved secondary recordings and the like is also a focus of the investigation committee looking into the case," he said.
