JAKARTA, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia may have returned from the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup without the trophy or a spot in the final, but the *Harimau Malaya* campaign in Indonesia clearly demonstrated that the national team possesses a solid foundation to face greater challenges ahead.

The national team's statistics were impressive: three wins, one draw, 10 goals scored, and zero conceded across four matches, making them the only team to finish the tournament unbeaten and without conceding a single goal.

The national squad, led by interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe, opened their Group A (Division 1) campaign with a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh before playing out a goalless draw against hosts Indonesia; both matches were held at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium.

Malaysia then thrashed Singapore 6-0 in their final group match at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, marking their biggest victory over their Causeway rivals since 1978.

However, that emphatic win was not enough to propel *Harimau Malaya* to the final, as Indonesia defeated Bangladesh 9-2 in the other group match.

Both teams finished with seven points and an identical goal difference of plus-nine; however, Indonesia emerged as group winners based on total goals scored, netting 11 compared to Malaysia's nine.

This highlights the critical aspect of Malaysia's campaign as an unbeaten team that did not concede a single goal ultimately failed to control its own destiny regarding a place in the final.

The draw against Indonesia, a match where the opposition played with 10 men for a significant period stood out as a key moment; despite dominating possession, Malaysia failed to convert their chances into a winning goal.

This does not mean the single point earned at GBK was without value, rather, the failure to capitalise on a numerical advantage ultimately left the team overly reliant on the results of other matches on the final day of the group stage.

However, the team's response to the disappointment of missing the final demonstrated positive maturity, as they returned to GBK to defeat Vietnam 1-0 in the third-place play-off.

A goal by substitute Fergus Tierney not only ensured Malaysia ended the tournament with a victory but also snapped a 12-year winless streak against that opponent dating back to 2014.

Keeping clean sheets in four matches highlighted the solid Malaysian defensive structure with goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi and the defensive line, led by captain Dion Cools maintained excellent discipline throughout the short, intense tournament.

In attack, Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi, Bergson da Silva, Stuart Wilkin, and Tierney were among the players who posed a threat, while the emergence of new players like Brad Tapp and Manuel Hidalgo added depth and competition within the squad.

Beyond on-field performance, this inaugural tournament provided a vital opportunity for Southeast Asian nations to test their strength in high-intensity competition while fostering regional rivalry.

For Malaysia, facing Bangladesh, Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam within a short span offered valuable exposure for the players and coaching staff to assess squad depth, tactical cohesion, and the team's ability to handle the pressure of high-stakes matches.

The tournament also added value to regional football through highly competitive clashes, increased attention on local players, and opportunities for teams to build confidence before facing challenges on the Asian and global stages.

If continued in the future, the FIFA ASEAN Cup has the potential to become a vital platform for elevating Southeast Asian football standards not only through consistent competition but also via the sharing of expertise, world-class hosting, and the growth of commercial value.

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup does not mark the end of the Harimau Malaya’s journey; rather, it establishes a clear benchmark showing that Malaysia possesses the organisation, character, and defensive record to compete, though the team must become more clinical when match-defining opportunities arise.

Indonesia was crowned champion of the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup which concluded yesterday after defeating a 10-man Thailand side 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes of play in the final at GBK Stadium.
