Selangor To Launch Mega NUTRISEL Initiative Inolving 900,000 School Students

05/10/2026 03:40 PM

KUALA LANGAT,  Oct 5 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government will launch the Mega Nutrisi Selangor (NUTRISEL) initiative in the middle of this month, benefiting more than 900,000 students across over 900 schools statewide.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the large-scale implementation is aimed at testing an approach to providing food assistance to all school students in Selangor, compared with the previous NUTRISEL programme, which targeted selected recipients.

He said the Mega NUTRISEL initiative would also enable the state government to identify areas for improvement, including the types of food products provided.

“Based on the response so far, everything is proceeding well, including securing an additional RM2 million on top of the existing allocation to strengthen the NUTRISEL initiative. This allows for the inclusion of other products, such as milk and bread, for the aid recipients.

“This initiative will be expanded on a massive scale to over 900 schools across Selangor, involving more than 900,000 students. The expansion is scheduled to take place in a few weeks, alongside a review of areas requiring improvement,” he said.

He said this to reporters after officiating the symbolic handover ceremony for the 2026 NUTRISEL programme at the Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) level at SMK Telok Panglima Garang here today.

Earlier, Amirudin distributed 746 NUTRISEL food packs to students at SK and SMK Telok Panglima Garang. The packs contained bread, water, nasi lemak, fruit and a portable fan.

The NUTRISEL programme, which runs from August to October 2026, involves a total allocation of RM12.6 million channelled through local authorities (PBT) and the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN).

Amirudin said the implementation of NUTRISEL in Kuala Langat had benefited 8,616 recipients across 78 schools, out of a total of 65,684 students under the MPKL administration.

He said the total number of recipients to date stood at 104,640 across various categories under the Selangor State Education Department (JPNS), covering 916 schools, and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), covering 16 schools.

This represents approximately 10 per cent of the total student population in Selangor.

The programme aims to help ease the financial burden on families of pupils and students from the B40 group, specifically those with a household income below RM2,000, while ensuring they receive adequate nutrition to support their concentration in learning.

Meanwhile, when asked about the proposal to amend the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), including increasing penalties for perpetrators of homicide following recent tragic incidents involving school students in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, Amirudin said the matter should be approached cautiously rather than emotionally.

“This issue needs to be viewed holistically; it is not just about punishment but also education. I do not oppose the proposal, but I need to review the matter further as it involves various perspectives.

“Furthermore, students need to realise that if they face problems, they should turn to their school or teachers for help. We will try to assist existing mental health mechanisms at both the school and state levels,” he said.
