PHNOM PENH, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is taking a new approach to promoting its medical tourism sector in Cambodia -- bringing healthcare directly to the community -- shifting away from conventional promotional campaigns.

The strategy took shape through MH WellFest Cambodia 2026, an event that combined a morning community run with health-focused activities designed to engage Cambodians at the grassroots level.

"Cambodians are a nation that loves healthcare and wellbeing. What we want to achieve with this event is simple -- when you talk about healthcare, it shouldn't just be about treatment, it should be about prevention,” Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) Marketing and Communications Vice-President Lokman Izam Abd Aziz told Bernama at the event on Sunday.

As part of a campaign to woo more Cambodians seeking treatment to Malaysian hospitals, Maybank (Cambodia) Plc and MHTC hosted MH WellFest Cambodia 2026 from Oct 3 to 4.

The event held at Borey Peng Huoth Eco Park in Phnom Penh also brought together 14 Malaysian hospitals.

About 800 people participated in MH WellFest Run, which featured the five-kilometre (km) and 10km run.

“The event connected families with the people, expertise and options offered by Malaysia’s healthcare institutions, while bringing financial readiness into the same conversation.

“The value for customers is clear: more clarity, more choice and a stronger support system around the people they care about most,” Maybank Cambodia Chief Executive Officer and Country Head Rath Sophoan said in a press statement.

MHTC Chief Executive Officer Datuk Suriaghandi Suppiah said: “MH WellFest Cambodia 2026 created a direct bridge between Cambodian visitors and this ecosystem, allowing them to meet Malaysian healthcare teams, learn from specialists and gain greater clarity and confidence as they consider care across borders.”

The endorsement of the event by the Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh further underscores the campaign’s status as a bilateral priority.

Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia Shaharuddin Onn said the growing connectivity between Malaysia and the Kingdom is creating new opportunities for families to access expertise, services and experiences across borders.

“MH WellFest Cambodia 2026 reflects this progress by linking Cambodian communities directly with Malaysia’s healthcare institutions and specialists.

“The event further reinforces people-to-people ties while enhancing awareness of Malaysia as a health tourism destination,” he said.
