HYDERABAD, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Pakistan will export an additional 70,000 tonnes of rice to Malaysia from October to December 2026, following diplomatic and commercial efforts undertaken at the behest of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office in a statement on Friday said the new export order for rice is significant for the Pakistani farming sector.

“Securing the additional export of 70,000 metric tonnes of Pakistani rice is the result of effective diplomatic and commercial efforts on the directives of the prime minister," it said.

Increasing access to global markets for Pakistani agricultural commodities is his government's top priority, Shehbaz said.

Pakistan, a major producer of premium and extra-long grain aromatic basmati rice, has identified Malaysia as a key potential growth market for trade in commodities.

A Pakistan delegation which included National Food Security Ministry's secretary Amer Ali Ahmed, Commerce Ministry secretary Jawad Paul, and representatives of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) participated in the recent Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) trade fair in Kuala Lumpur and discussed rice trade with top Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS) executives.

Pakistan is also working to expand its meat exports to Malaysia.
