KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has urged content creators, influencers and social media users to prioritise decorum, consideration and humanity when generating content, particularly with regard to the latest situation concerning Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said that while many were eager to know about the former prime minister's health status, not everything needed to be turned into news or social media content.
"Technology may evolve and we may hold differing views, but let us not use social media to the extent of losing our decorum, morals and humanity," he said in a video uploaded on X tonight.
In this regard, Fahmi urged all parties to allow space and time for Dr Mahathir and his family, who were grieving following the passing of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Fahmi noted that Dr Mahathir's son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, had earlier requested that the family’s privacy be respected during their period of mourning.
Meanwhile, Fahmi reminded social media users against spreading speculative posts, insensitive artificial intelligence (AI)-generated material or inappropriate comments.
"If we come across humiliating content, insensitive AI material or posts wishing ill upon others, do not share, comment or give them views.
"If you see such content, report it directly to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) or the police," he added.
