PETALING JAYA, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Sunway Medical Centre Damansara (SMCD), the fourth tertiary hospital under the Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG), was officially launched today, marking a new chapter in specialist healthcare and international patient care for communities in the Klang Valley.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who said the establishment of private hospitals such as SMCD supports the state’s Rancangan Selangor Kedua (RS-2) development plans to build a caring, liveable, sustainable and resilient state.

“The healthcare industry was an important component of Selangor’s service sector and contributed to the state’s economic growth.

“Public health, health industry also considered as a service sector which contributes to the Selangor economy,” he said during a press conference following the official launch of Sunway Medical Centre Damansara (SMCD) here today.

Amirudin said the development of healthcare facilities had also contributed to improvements in the health and longevity of Selangorians, with life expectancy increasing from between 65 and 68 years in 2008 to between 75 and 80 years currently.

Meanwhile, Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long said total capital expenditure for SMCD's development and upcoming expansion is expected to reach approximately RM460 million.

According to Lau, the investment includes expanding two new ward levels (Levels 11 and 12), which will bring overall bed capacity to 375 beds upon completion

Beyond expanding the main facility, Sunway has earmarked an adjacent three to four-acre site for future development, which includes a dedicated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre, a senior living facility (Sunway Sanctuary), and an evaluation to set up Malaysia's first Proton Beam Therapy Centre.

He added that the Sunway Group has also invested RM50 million in surrounding public infrastructure, including a direct flyover ramp from Persiaran Surian and a pedestrian link bridge to the Surian MRT station.

SMCD, which commenced operations in December 2024, currently houses over 300 beds and 60 specialist consultation suites, supported by advanced technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotic-assisted surgical solutions.
