GEORGE TOWN, Sept 30 (Bernama) – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has broken into the top 350 universities in the world, ranking in the 326-350 band in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.
USM said in a statement today that the achievement placed the university in the top 15 per cent of the 2,297 universities listed in the latest edition of the rankings.
“This position continues USM’s progress on the international stage, after ranking in the 601-800 band from 2020 to 2023 and the 401-500 band from 2024 to 2026.
“This achievement demonstrates the progress of a Malaysian research university amid global competition, with improved scores in all five of THE’s assessment components,” the statement said.
USM said internationalisation remained the university’s most prominent strength, recording a score of 80.4 compared with 76.5 in the previous edition, reflecting its international dimension through international students and staff as well as research collaborations with academic partners across countries.
Industry engagement also recorded a significant improvement, with the Industry component score rising by 10.6 points to 75.1, the largest increase among the five assessment components.
USM said the achievement strengthened the position of knowledge transfer as one of its strengths in linking research outcomes with innovation and technology development.
The Research Quality component recorded a score of 66.2, while improvements were also recorded in the Teaching and Research Environment components, reflecting progress in the university’s learning environment and research capacity.
USM said the recognition also brought a responsibility to ensure that academic excellence benefited society, with a continued focus on education that develops talent and research to help address national and global challenges.
The university also expressed its appreciation to its academic community, researchers, staff and students, as well as its industry and community partners, who contributed to the achievement.
