Toyota Global Sales, Output Drop For Second Straight Month In August

TOKYO, Sept 29 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said on Tuesday that its global sales dropped 6.4 per cent in August from a year earlier to 790,743 units, marking the second consecutive monthly decline, reported Xinhua.

Meanwhile, its global production fell 5.9 per cent year on year to 700,860 vehicles, also down for a second straight month.

The company’s overseas sales slipped 8.4 per cent from a year earlier to 685,676 cars, marking the seventh consecutive monthly drop.

By market, sales in China plunged 22.8 per cent, while those in the United States (US) slipped 4.4 per cent and those in West Asia sank 37.5 per cent, according to the world’s largest automaker by volume.

Domestic sales in Japan, however, rose 9.1 per cent to 105,067 units, largely supported by strong demand for new models.

Overseas production, meanwhile, declined 7.6 per cent to 496,373 vehicles, extending its decline to four months.

Domestic output also decreased 1.7 per cent to 204,487 units, marking the first decline in four months.

Toyota partly attributed the drop to production disruptions caused by the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan in July, as well as typhoons.
