Sungai Dua Water Plant Secures Three MBOR Records

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- The Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP) operated by Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (PBAPP) has been recognised in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for achieving three records, including the country’s highest water recovery capacity.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the plant was also recognised as the first water treatment plant with zero residual discharge and the first with zero plant losses.

“Earning this prestigious recognition is a noteworthy achievement. Earning the recognition on environment-friendly grounds is the icing on the cake,” he said in his speech at the presentation of the MBOR recognition to PBAPP here today.

Also present were PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan and MBOR chief executive officer Christopher Wong Hong Wai.

Chow said the achievement proved that PBAPP continued to break new ground in the water supply industry, while reflecting the state government’s and the corporation’s longstanding commitment to improving water supply services for the benefit of the people and businesses in Penang.

Chow, who is also chairman of PBAPP, said the state government’s goal was to make water supply an asset rather than a liability by 2030, with PBAPP implementing the Water Contingency Plan 2030 (WCP 2030) since 2023.

He said Phase One of the WCP 2030 had been completed, increasing Penang’s maximum water treatment capacity from 1,599 million litres per day (MLD) in 2022 to 1,732 MLD this year.

“Phase Two of the WCP 2030 is underway. We will build four new water treatment plants to produce more treated water in Seberang Perai. Phase Three is also underway, with work having commenced on two major pipelines to enable more treated water to be pumped from Seberang Perai to Penang Island.

“The dedicated pipelines are from Sungai Dua to Butterworth and from Macallum to Bukit Dumbar. When all the WCP 2030 projects are completed by 2030 or 2031, future records will show the completion of eight water projects at a cost of RM2.1 billion to ensure water supply sufficiency for Penang until the 2030s,” he added.

Chow said the projects would also tap three additional daily raw water sources for Penang, namely the expanded Mengkuang Dam, Sungai Perai and Sungai Kerian, while increasing the state’s total water treatment capacity by 602 MLD.

He also pointed out that Penang’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had increased by 31.6 per cent from RM99.0 billion in 2021 to RM130.3 billion in 2025, since Malaysia entered the endemic phase of COVID-19.
