KUALA NERUS, Sept  23 (Bernama) -- Prof Dr Suriyani Muhamad has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), effective Sept 28.

UMT Corporate Communications Office, in a statement today, said the appointment was based on her extensive experience in academia and management, as well as her expertise in economics.

It said Suriyani is expected to bring a comprehensive leadership perspective in strengthening UMT’s position as a university specialising in marine and aquatic fields.

Suriyani previously served as dean of UMT’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Development before being appointed deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) in January 2025.

“Throughout her tenure in the portfolios, she focused on strengthening the university’s academic ecosystem, including developing study programmes that are responsive to current changes, industry needs and developments in the job market.

“Internationalisation was also among her priorities through the expansion of mobility programmes, providing UMT students with opportunities to gain global academic experience, cross-cultural exposure and build networks with international institutions and communities,” it said.

The statement also said UMT pro vice-chancellor (Industry, Community and Digital Networking) Prof Dr Noor Maizura Mohamad Noor had been appointed as deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) effective the same date.

It said Noor Maizura’s extensive experience in academic management, industry and community networking, as well as the university’s digitalisation agenda, is expected to strengthen the continuity of academic management, particularly in developing relevant and competitive academic programmes.
