Canada's British Columbia Sues OpenAI Over Deadly School Shooting In February - Reports

MOSCOW, Sept 22 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The Canadian province of British Columbia filed a lawsuit against the US artificial intelligence developer OpenAI over its alleged role in a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge earlier this year, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti, quoting a CBC report.

The CBC report cited a statement by provincial Attorney General Niki Sharma.

The Wall Street Journal previously reported, citing the company and other sources, that OpenAI had blocked the account of the suspect in the British Columbia school attack due to violations of the usage policy for its generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, months before the incident, yet decided not to contact the Canadian police.

The province is suing OpenAI for failing to notify law enforcement about threats posted on its ChatGPT platform prior to the mass shooting, as well as for "creating an unsafe product," the broadcaster said.

The shooting at the Canadian school in Tumbler Ridge took place on February 10. A teacher and five students aged 13 to 17 were killed. Two other victims — the suspect's mother and half-brother — were found in a nearby home. Dozens of people were injured. The suspect took his own life.
