REMBAU, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- The ‘Sopit Biru Sungai Timun’ programme is emerging as a promising tourism attraction in Negeri Sembilan, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, local heritage and community experiences at Pengkalan Nelayan Sungai Timun here.

Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim said the area is not only known for its ‘sepit biru’ (giant freshwater prawn) and fishing activities; visitors can also watch fireflies, stargaze, sample local food, and experience the local community’s lifestyle and culture.

He said these unique attractions and advantages have also created economic opportunities for the local community to benefit directly from tourism and ecotourism activities in the area.

“When visitors come to Sungai Timun, they will use the services of boat operators, stay at local chalets and purchase food from local traders. This is the kind of tourism development we want, one that directly benefits the community,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Sopit Biru Sungai Timun programme at Pengkalan Sungai Timun here today.

Meanwhile, Ismail said 14,000 giant freshwater prawn fry had been released into Sungai Timun in conjunction with the 2026 Sopit Biru Sungai Timun Challenge.

He said last year, more than 650,000 fish and prawn fry had been released into Negeri Sembilan’s waters as part of efforts to preserve the river ecosystem.

The programme featured various activities, including a giant freshwater prawn cooking competition, a decorated boat competition, the Joran Jaguh Kampung fishing competition, contests for children, Rahmah Sale, exhibitions by government departments and agencies, as well as evening activities such as firefly watching along Sungai Timun and stargazing, making the programme suitable for the whole family.
