WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Bernama-dpa) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump wants to further accelerate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country despite growing warnings about the existential risks posed by the technology, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
He pointed out once again that the US was ahead of China and the rest of the world in AI technology and said he wanted it to stay that way.
Most recently, after AI models were found to have carried out cyberattacks with limited or no human intervention, including incidents involving leading AI software companies Anthropic and OpenAI, concerns have grown over the need to slow the development of the technology.
Both companies have reported incidents in which AI models accessed or compromised computer systems during cybersecurity evaluations, raising concerns about the risk of AI systems escaping human control.
Some researchers in the sector also warn that AI could potentially cause human extinction, although there is no universal consensus on this.
At the same time, there is a growing movement in the US against the construction of huge data centres for artificial intelligence, partly because the facilities drive up electricity and water costs.
Trump also announced that an “AI Force” would address the “bad” effects of AI within the existing criminal code.
In this context, he referred to the Space Force, founded during his first term to address threats from space.
He also said he would soon appoint an “AI Czar”, a kind of government commissioner for the technology.
Silicon Valley entrepreneur David Sacks held the role until he stepped down in March, after his term as an external government employee expired.
Details of the “AI Force” announced by Trump were initially unclear.
Its creation could also be interpreted as an initial attempt by his administration to establish government oversight of the technology.
