PJ HSIS Records 69 Cardiology Intervention Cases In Single Day

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- The Sultan Idris Shah Hospital Heart Centre (PJ HSIS) in Serdang, Selangor handled 69 cardiology intervention cases in a single day yesterday, highlighting the centre’s capacity in providing specialised heart care.

The Health Ministry (MOH), in a post on X today, said 40 of the cases were elective procedures, while the remaining 29 were emergency cases, including four primary percutaneous coronary intervention (Primary PCI) procedures requiring immediate action to save heart attack patients.

PJ HSIS accounted for 45 per cent of the total cardiac intervention cases handled by all 10 MOH cardiac centres.

“The achievement reflects the strong commitment, efficiency and teamwork of the HSIS cardiology team in ensuring patients receive high-quality heart care that is delivered quickly, safely and effectively,” the ministry said.

Based on the infographic shared, the centre performed 44 angiogram procedures to examine heart blood vessels and 39 PCI procedures to open blocked arteries using balloons and stents.

PJ HSIS also managed 13 complex coronary cases using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) technology, which allows more precise and safer treatment.

Among the advanced procedures performed were four RotaPro Rotational Atherectomy cases and three Intravascular Lithotripsy procedures, specialised treatments for calcified heart blood vessels that are difficult to treat using conventional methods.

The ministry said the centre typically operates from 8 am to 6 pm, with all seven cardiac catheterisation laboratories (Cath Labs) fully operational to ensure timely treatment for patients.

After office hours, four Cath Labs continue operating until late at night to clear the remaining cases awaiting treatment.

The high-intensity operation involved 80 healthcare personnel, including 14 cardiologists, six medical officers, 10 radiographers, eight assistant medical officers, and 40 nurses and healthcare assistants.

The ministry also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for recognising PJ HSIS as a Cardiac Centre of Excellence (COE) under the MOH, as well as to all healthcare workers committed to serving the community.

The public was also reminded to recognise warning signs of a heart attack, including chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to the arms, jaw or back, shortness of breath, cold sweats and nausea.
