BETONG, Sept 18 (Bernama) -- A date for commercial flights at Bebuling Short Take-Off and Landing (STOLport) in Spaoh, near here, has yet to be set despite the successful completion of a test flight today at the RM248.03 million facility.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the date for commercial operations had yet to be determined and would be decided after discussions with the relevant parties.
He said safety, operational, maintenance and licensing requirements must be finalised before commercial flights could begin.
“In practical terms, the test flight has been completed and went smoothly. We are very happy that today we were able to see this airport being used,” Uggah said in a post on his Facebook page today.
The STOLport has a 1.119-kilometre runway and is capable of accommodating small to medium-sized aircraft, such as the Beechcraft King Air.
Uggah said the facility had the potential to handle passengers and cargo, including agricultural produce from the approximately 1,000-hectare Agro Park near the STOLport.
He said the STOLport was also expected to support the tourism sector in Betong, with flights between Kuching and Bebuling taking about 15 minutes compared with around three hours by road.
