Encouraging Response As New-generation MyKad Issuance Runs Smoothly

17/09/2026 02:19 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- The process of issuing the new-generation MyKad went smoothly today, with an encouraging response from the public, National Registration Department (NRD) Identity Card Division director Muhammad Asraf Sukadi said.

He said the number of applicants for MyKad replacement at NRD Putrajaya had increased to more than 300 this morning, compared with about 100 on a normal day.

“The response has been quite encouraging. There are more people than usual. This morning alone, the registration numbers were already above 300 and many are waiting for the new MyKad.

“Alhamdulillah, there have been no problems so far and everything is going smoothly. At NRD Putrajaya, it takes about 30 minutes to get a new MyKad if there are no problems, while for 12-year-old children, it takes an average of one hour,” he told reporters after inspecting the implementation of the new-generation MyKad issuance process here today.

Muhammad Asraf said the public had also given positive feedback on the new MyKad.

On the QR code on the MyKad, he said it could only be accessed by enforcement agencies, demonstrating that its security was at the highest level.

“The QR code can only be used by enforcement agencies, currently NRD. So, the QR code cannot be read by an ordinary phone camera.

“This is to obtain information and also for enforcement purposes, to verify whether the person is the MyKad holder or not,” he said.

He also advised the public not to rush to replace their MyKad with the new-generation card as the existing MyKad can still be used for various transactions.

“Many may experience FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and want to replace theirs. As the Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced, people should not rush to the NRD,” he said.

Starting today, applications for the new-generation MyKad can be made at 40 NRD branches equipped with printing facilities, with the cards ready on the same day.

At NRD branches without printing facilities, applications for the new-generation MyKad can still be made, with the cards ready within five working days.

The new-generation MyKad is equipped with security features including a Dynamic Security Hologram and Transparent Window on the front, as well as an Enforcement QR Code and Dual Interface Chip on the back.
