SINGAPORE, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Singapore could draw on civil aviation's approach to safety in safeguarding advanced artificial intelligence (AI), with standards, safety measures and personnel training key to keeping the public safe, said its Digital Development and Information Minister Josephine Teo.
Drawing a parallel with aviation, Teo said safeguards for advanced AI could require systems similar to those in civil aviation, covering areas ranging from aircraft manufacturing and maintenance to airspace and airport management.
Teo said people expected companies in the civil aviation sector to properly train their personnel and consistently implement safety safeguards.
"Without such assurances, neither passenger nor crew will board. Civil aviation would never have grown.
"Trust is an essential requirement for a technology to be regularly relied upon," she said in her LinkedIn post on Thursday.
Teo said Singapore needed to build similar safeguards alongside ongoing AI adoption, including developing ways to test and assure AI systems, strengthening technical capabilities to evaluate advanced models and providing organisations with practical guidance on responsible use.
"Initiatives such as AI Verify, the Singapore AI Safety Institute and our Model AI governance frameworks support this work," she said.
Teo said Singapore would continue to test, learn and strengthen its approach to AI advancement as trust lies at the core of its vision of a vibrant AI hub.
"We will work with industry, researchers and international partners so that AI can be used with confidence for the benefit of all," she said, adding that international collaboration was also essential because AI safety could not be addressed by any country alone.
She said the International Scientific Exchange for AI Safety, which brings together diverse perspectives from around the world, had helped identify shared priorities for global AI safety research through the Singapore Consensus.
