Amirudin Proposes ‘Gagasan 100 Tahun Malaysia’ For Long-term National Vision

SHAH ALAM, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia must look boldly to the future by developing a long-term vision as the country approaches its 100th year, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said. 

He said this required a vision that went beyond a single term of government, an economic cycle or a generation of leaders, to ensure that Malaysia could become a united, high-income, sovereign and just nation by then.

To this end, he proposed a planning framework called ‘Gagasan 100 Tahun Malaysia’, focusing on five key areas, the first being the development of a confident and compassionate nation.

“A nation’s confidence does not come from proclaiming that we are always right or better than others.

“People need to know who they are by understanding history honestly, and should not feel threatened simply because their neighbours speak a different language or practise a different religion or custom,” he said in his speech at the ‘Bicara Perdana Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor’ programme in conjunction with Malaysia Day 2026 at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic (PSA) here today.

Also present were Deputy Higher Education Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Selangor State Secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin.

Amirudin said the second area was the economy in an era of climate change, which was traditionally associated with growth, employment, trade and investment.

“We can no longer separate the economy from the environment. Floods, extreme heat, water supply disruptions and instability in food production are no longer peripheral issues.

“This calls for, among other things, more disaster-resilient urban planning, effective drainage and flood mitigation systems, as well as the protection of forests and rivers,” he said.

He said the other three areas requiring attention were Malaysia’s position on the global and Asian stage, the country as a democracy, and the challenges facing the younger generation in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

“We are living in an era of great-power competition, trade wars, geopolitical tensions and changing supply chains. At the same time, the centre of gravity of the global economy is increasingly shifting towards Asia, and we need to be prepared for it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said the state government now had a flood dashboard to monitor flood developments and the implementation of mitigation projects in greater detail.

“The system is important for identifying the status of projects, particularly those involving state projects or local authorities that have been completed while federal projects are still pending.

“The state government will continue to expedite the implementation of flood mitigation projects, especially during the dry season, which is considered a suitable period for construction and upgrading works,” he said.
