T'ganu Perhilitan Tracking Wild Elephant Hit By Vehicle On Jalan Jerangau-jabor

DUNGUN, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu branch of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is tracking a wild elephant that is believed to have been hit by a vehicle at Kilometre 160 (KM160) of Jalan Jerangau-Jabor, close to Jabor Estate, near here, last night.

Its director, Dennis Ten Choon Yung, said that five agency staff rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the information to conduct an inspection and locate the elephant.

He said the wild elephant is believed to have strayed from a nearby protected forest, namely the Bukit Bandi-Cerul Protected Forest.

The elephant is believed to be of the Asian elephant species, while its gender has yet to be identified.

"Monitoring and further inspection of the elephant will continue to identify its location and ensure the current condition of the animal," he said in a statement today.

He said that further examination at the scene found traces of mud and food believed to be the elephant's vomit near a Perodua Ativa involved in the accident.

He also said there was a wildlife crossing sign some four kilometres from the accident site.

"Vehicle drivers are advised to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits, especially when passing through areas that could potentially be wildlife crossings," he added.

Previously, Bernama reported that three individuals sustained minor injuries in an accident involving two cars after one of them hit an elephant at KM160 Jalan Jerangau-Jabor here last night.
